History of Chianni

The history of Chianni dates back to Etruscan times, and the traces of this millenary civilization are still visible in the surrounding area. Even the toponym Chianni could derive from the Etruscan name Claniu. During the Middle Ages, the Bishop of Volterra and the Republic of Pisa alternated in governing the village, until, in 1406, Chianni was subjected to Florence. In the grand-ducal era, in 1629, Chianni, together with Rivalto, Montevaso and Mela was assigned as a feud to the Florentine Riccardi family as a marquisate. This until 1776 when the grand ducal fiefdoms were finally abolished. Subsequently Chianni passed under the control of the Podesteria of Rosignano and was then united with the Vicariate of Lari.

What to see in Chianni

Chianni is a pretty medieval village of Etruscan origin where you can admire some interesting architectures. Among the main attractions of the town are the Chiesa di San Donato and the Cappella della Santissima Annunziata.

Cappella della Compagnia della Santissima Annunziata

One of the most evocative places to visit in Chianni is the Cappella della Compagnia della Santissima Annunziata. Built in the early eighteenth century, probably during the expansion works of the parish church, this chapel has the characteristic of being completely underground.

It is a true architectural gem characterized by a large barrel vault and a beautiful cycle of frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tempesti (1739). The frescoes, which cover both the vault and the side walls, depict the Eternal, the Nativity of Christ and the Assumption of the Virgin. The statues on the altar, in enamel-painted plaster, represent the announcing Angel and the announced Madonna.

The intimate and suggestive atmosphere of the chapel will transport you to an era of devotion and spirituality.

Chiesa di San Donato

Another unmissable stop is the Chiesa di San Donato, located in the heart of the historic center of Chianni. Documented since 1277, this religious building was completely redone in 1812. The interior, with a nave and four side chapels, houses a magnificent altar and some valuable works of art. Among these, the Saint Anthony in adoration of the Child Jesus attributed to Ventura Salimbeni, the Holy Family by Giovanni Battista Tempesti and the statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand out. To complete the visit, all you have to do is admire the fresco in the apse with Christ among the saints Donato, Maura, Francesco, Caterina, Lino, Domenico.

Santuario della Madonna del Carmine

Just outside Chianni, you can also visit the Santuario della Madonna del Carmine which is located less than a kilometer from the town. Located in a beautiful hilly position, this sanctuary offers a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Visit it to enjoy a moment of tranquility and admire the beauty of nature that surrounds the place of worship. Here already in the thirteenth century there was a church dedicated to Santa Maria while the title of Santa Maria del Carmine was attributed to it starting from the seventeenth century.

What to see around Chianni

Rivalto

If you have time on your hands, I suggest you visit the picturesque village of Rivalto, which is located near Chianni. This ancient village will enchant you with its narrow cobbled streets, stone houses and breathtaking views. For art lovers, here is another sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine and a couple of other historic places of worship.

Santuario della Madonna del Carmine in Rivalto

The Santuario della Madonna del Carmine in Rivalto is located in the woods just outside the town. Of eighteenth-century origin, the sanctuary is characterized by a beautiful portico that precedes the entrance. Its simple and charming architecture and atmosphere of peace and tranquility make it an ideal place for a spiritual visit.

Cascate del Ghiaccione

If you love nature and hiking, you cannot miss the Cascate del Ghiaccione. Located near Chianni, these spectacular waterfalls are located in a natural wooded area and offer a suggestive and luxuriant scenery. Located along the Carbonaia stream, there are three waterfalls, with jumps of up to 10 meters in height. Here the water is always cold, but perhaps you might like this in the summer if you are looking for some refreshment. Take a walk along the surrounding paths and let yourself be enchanted by the pristine beauty of nature.

Other interesting villages to visit in the area

The province of Pisa is full of villages and interesting places to visit. Among those closest to Chianni, I point out Lajatico with its famous Teatro del Silenzio, the surprising Peccioli, Lari with its Castello dei Vicari and Montecatini Val di Cecina.
