Exploring the enchanting Stretti di Giaredo

The majestic Stretti di Giaredo are outlined as works of art sculpted by nature itself, with rocky walls that rise up to 50 meters in height. This extraordinary canyon complex was shaped over time by the Gordana Creek, a tributary of the Magra River. The clear and crystalline waters of the Gordana, coming from the peaks of Mount Tecchione, furrow the picturesque valley of Zeri and, with a majestic flow, continue towards the valley until they reach Pontremoli. Immersing yourself in the Straits of Giaredo means entering a world of evocative panoramas: mirrors of transparent water, gentle waterfalls that slide between narrow gorges, and imposing boulders that stand like guardians on the bed of the stream. This enchanted place is home to a vast wealth of flora and fauna, which blend in a harmonious dance with its surroundings.

The exciting experience of climbing the gorges of the Stretti di Giaredo

To fully experience the magic of the Stretti di Giaredo, it is advisable to embark on the adventure during the hot summer season. This period is chosen not only for the mild temperatures, but also because the intense luminosity of the sun contrasts with the shadow that dominates the straits, thus offering a clear and vibrant view. However, there is an element of challenge: the waters of the stream, rarely caressed by the sun’s rays, maintain a rigid, almost glacial temperature. In addition to this, the possibility of flooding after the rains must be taken into consideration, which is why it is not advisable to embark on the adventure immediately after it has rained. The clarity of the waters is essential, since only in this way will you be able to scrutinize the rocky seabed and move safely among the rocks smoothed by the current.

Preparing for this unique adventure requires care and attention. We recommend choosing a clear day, enriched by the warmth of the sun, and equipping yourself with a pair of well-worn but reliable trainers, capable of resisting water. The ideal wardrobe includes a bathing suit ready for diving, together with a wetsuit, or at least a k-way, which can act as a shield against the impact of fresh water. For those who want a touch of comfort and playful entertainment, a dinghy or airbed will add a light-hearted element to the journey. In fact, these elements can transform the route into a more varied experience, allowing you to tackle the stream with creativity and even more fun.

The route along the Stretti di Giaredo

The starting point of this memorable adventure is at the designated rest area, from which a short path of a few hundred meters winds its way. This path, almost a sort of ritual passage, leads explorers to the heart of the stream. As you enter this unique environment, you can opt for a walk among the stones along the shore or immerse yourself directly in the water, thus anticipating the excitement of what is to come. For those looking for a more relaxed experience, or a little cryotherapy, the temptation to take a dip in one of the Gordana’s natural pools is irresistible.

Continuing north, we find ourselves in front of the spectacular entrance to the Stretti di Giaredo. Here, imposing rock walls rise up, almost touching each other, while the crystal clear stream faithfully reflects the changing tones of the surrounding rocks. Going up the course of the Gordana, you enter the first gorge, a passage that requires a short dip in the refreshing waters. However, there’s no need to worry, as this is just the beginning of the aquatic thrills that await. The path that unfolds in front of you is dotted with fascinating elements: enveloping gorges, mysterious cavities, natural caves and small waterfalls that descend from above. As you progress along the trail, you’ll often be in ankle-deep or knee-deep water, giving the walk a feeling of intimate connection with your surroundings. The route is generally completed in about an hour, but embracing the dawn of a new day could be ideal, allowing you to fully enjoy the warm caresses of the sun and the fresh delights of the water, thus creating lasting memories of this adventure unique.
