Da Mario in Buonconvento: the traditional cuisine in the heart of the Crete Senesi
The restaurant Da Mario in Buonconvento looks like the classic trattoria with no bells and whistles.
This place has two large rooms and in summer you can also eat in an outdoor Court.
The setting is rustic and the staff, especially the owner, is very helpful and pleasant.
The menu
The menu offers many traditional dishes of tuscan cuisine. The portions are totally satisfying and the cook doesn’t skimp with condiments.
You can start with antipasti like Tuscan crostini or meats.
Among the first courses I definitely recommend to take the pici, available in different variants. I’ve chosen the kind with a sauce made with sausage and mushrooms. A real pleasure!
As for the main courses, there are really many choices. Among the various dishes are offered the piglet, the lamb with artichokes and many steaks including the tomahawk.
I opted for a good rabbit with olives.
Even the side dishes are typical: potatoes, artichokes, beans, mushrooms etc.
“Dulcis in fundo” (dessert in the end)… the choice is between great classics such as Tiramisu (notable!), the crème caramel and the zuppa inglese (my choice).
The bill
Taking first, second course and dessert beside the classic housewine, you spend around 25-30 euros. A fair price, in line with expectations.
In conclusion…
If you are fond of Tuscan cuisine and want to eat some really great pici, I recommend this restaurant.
